1 Modern Architecture

1.1 Concept of Modern Architecture

Architecture is the study of creating a beautiful and useful environment aboutspace.And architects plan and design space.In other words,architects revise land forusers.The most important factors in architecture are the beauty and function of spacefor users.To achieve this goal,architects use social and natural knowledge about sitebefore planning and design.

Architecture is closely related to various fields.In particular,architecture is relatedto civil engineering,landscape architecture,and urban planning.First,civil engineering ismost similar to architecture compared to other fields.The similarities between architectureand civil engineering are the sites to be designed.However,architecture emphasizes artisticaspects,while civil engineering emphasizes engineering aspects.

The similarities between architecture and landscape architecture are as follows.

Architecture's targets include buildings and their surroundings.The surroundingsshould be considered in architectural design.In the past,architects did landscapedesign.Currently,landscape designers also design building related with architecture.

The similarities between architecture and urban planning are as follows.Urban

planning is the placement of space according to human habitation and space functions.

As such,urban planning is similar to architecture in terms of changing space.However,urban planning is generally targeted at a whole city.And the site of urban planning islarger than architecture.

Next,let's take a look at the history of modern architecture.Environment hasbeen constantly changed by humans since humans existed.Because humans have doneactivities like architecture before the field of architecture was created.

Basically,architecture changes space.From that point of view,architecture hasexisted since humans existed.And the result of changes can be called architecture.

In Asia,the concept of architecture has been used to create housing since a long timebefore.And the history of mankind is the history of architecture.

However,the modern meaning of architecture for public space design wasformed around the United States in the 1860s.The most important concept in modernarchitecture is public space design.The purpose of modern architecture is different fromthe past.A previous concept of architecture was aimed at creating housing for privatespace.However,the purpose of modern architecture is to solve urban problems causedby urbanization.And architects provide space for urban normal class.With the emphasisof public architecture in the field of architecture,the harmony with the surroundingsas well as the design of buildings was emphasized.Public architecture areas developedbecause of the importance ofpublic space.

In this point of view,the firstperson to introduce the concept ofpublic space design was Frederick

Law Olmsted in 1858.

Basically,Frederick Law

Olmsted is called the father ofpublic space design.For the firsttime,he used the term "public

Park in the middle of New York City in the 19th century.

He studied the park's facilities and architecture.And he especially established theconcept of public parks.The number of parks which he created is more than 80 in the

United States.In addition,he was responsible for the basic protection design of Niagara

Falls.Since then,public space design has been established not just as a technology butas a field of study.Ancient architecture developed into private spaces at the requestof kings and nobles.However,the concept of modern architecture is different fromthe past.And modern architecture is changed by social necessity.Modern publicarchitecture aims to improve public environment as a public park.

Before modern times,public space design was recognized as a technique withoutsystem and process.Modern public space design was recognized as a systematic study.

Later,Ian McHarg made a scientific methodology for public space design.He was

a professor at the University of Pennsylvania.In addition,Ian McHarg presented themethod of public space design based on ecology.Especially in modern society wheremany problems such as environmental pollution occurred,ecological architectureplanning was a key for modern architecture

Since then,the field of public space design has developed as a field to givesolutions to global environmental problems.And architects have tried to find a way todevelop environment in a sustainable way.

Lately,the aesthetics of public space design has become important.Thismovement was shown in the works of various architects.The famous architects are

George Hargeaves and P.Walker on the aesthetics of public space design.They wantedto make environmental art.

1.2 Architecture Planning and Design

Architecture is the creation of spaces such as housing,plazas and so on.Also,architecture planning and design refers to activities to create these spaces.In order tocreate these spaces,architects come up with plans about space.And architects designtarget sites.A specific design of space is carried out based on such a plan.Therefore,the

meaning of architecture planning and design lies in the overall activities.

Different countries have different definitions of public space design.In the United

States,where modern public space design was born,public space design is defined as ascientific research to make ecological use of land.

Basically,the meaning of design is to discover problems and find solutions tosolving problems.In this point of view,architecture planning and design can be dividedinto architecture planning and architecture design.Architecture planning is a step infinding problems and providing directions for solving problems through analysis ofsites.

Based on architecture planning,architecture design is a step in creativelydetermining the form of space.Through these design steps,the actual constructionof space is subsequently carried out.In particular,the creative ideas of architects areimportant in the design stage.

In practice,it is difficult to distinguish accurately between architecture planningand architecture design.For a realistic space,the boundaries between planning anddesign are not clear.Depending on the size of site,architecture planning can takeprecedence as well as architecture design.
