The History of Computer Development

In 1889,American scientist Herman Hollerith developed an electric

tabulating machine based on electricity,which was used to store calculation data.

In 1930,American scientist Vannevar Bush invented the world's first analogelectronic computer.On February 14,1946,ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator

And Calculator),the world's first electronic computer customized by the Americanmilitary,was unveiled at the university of Pennsylvania in the United States.ENIAC was developed to meet the need of calculating trajectory at the Aberdeenweapons proving ground.It used 17,840 electronic tubes,measured 80 feet by 8feet,weighed 28 tons,consumed 170 kW,performed 5,000 addition operations persecond,and cost about $487,000.The invention of ENIAC was epoch-making,indicating the arrival of the era of electronic computer.

First Generation:Electron Tube Digital Machine (1946-1958)

In terms of hardware,vacuum tubes were used for logic components andmercury delay lines were used for main memory,cathode ray oscillograph tubeelectrostatic storage,magnetic drum,magnetic core and external storage usedmagnetic tape.The software used the machine language and assembly language.

The main application fields were military and scientific computing.It wascharacterized by large volume,high power consumption and poor reliability.It wasslow and expensive but laid the foundation for future computer development.

Second Generation:Transistor Digital Machine (1958-1964)

Hardware operating systems,high-level languages and their compilerapplications were dominated by scientific computing and transaction processing,and were beginning to enter the field of industrial control.It was characterized byreduced volume,reduced energy consumption,improved reliability and operationspeed.Its performance was much better than the first generation of computer.

Third Generation:Integrated Circuit Digital Machine (1964-1970)

In terms of hardware,medium and small scale integrated circuits(MSI,SSI)were used for logic elements,and magnetic cores were still used for main memory.

In the aspect of software,time-sharing operating system and structured andlarge-scale programming method appeared.It was characterized by higher speed
