Chapter One Overview of Textile Business in

Global Market

Section One Global Textile Business Markets

1.Vorld Textile Markets Overview世界纺织市场概述

The world experienced the major changeover in the textile business with British industrial revolu-tion,where the British took the technology to India etc.So the developed countries became the originof technology while the developing countries moved towards being the manufacturing hubs due to theabundant manpower.

Textile industry is an important pillar industry in China.Since 1994,China has been the biggestexport country of textile clothing in the world. With first-class technology and stronger competitivenessof the world, textile industry has become one of the most important manufacture industries of China.

Fig1.1 shows a busy Chinese port.

The global textile market was valued at approximately USD858 billion in 2018 and is expected togenerate around USD1,207 billion by 2025.The success of the modern industry of world textiles is de-pendent largely upon continuing major investment in innovation and invention. The reason whichforces the textile business to the promotion is the increasing share of technical textiles

Globally, the technical textiles contribute to about 27%of the world textile industry,in some of

the western countries its share is even 50%.The global technical textile market is projected to grow ata compound annual growtl rate (CAGR)of 5.16%to reach USD334.938 billion by 2025.

(1)Overview of Chinese Textile Apparel Industry

In China, six sub-industries of the textile industry include cotton, chemical fiber textile andprinting dyeing finishing industry, wool textile and dyeing finishing industry, linen textile, silk tex-tile and finishing industry, finished textile product manufacturing as well as knitted and woven productindustry.

As a traditional advantage industry, textile industry plays an important role in national economy.China is the world's largest textile producer and exporter. The output volume of China textile industryaccounts for more than half of the global one.The processing capacity and export value of textile fiberaccount for a higher proportion in the world. The market international share exceeds one third of theworld.

It is predicted that in the next 3-5 years,China textile industry in possess of perfect industrychain and large domestic market will continue to maintain a certain advantage in the world. However,in the longer run,the costs of China textile industry rise so fast that the production capacity of the tex-tile industry will continue to transfer overseas, which will undermine the overall advantages of Chinatextile industry chain.

(2)Overview of Indian Textile Apparel Industry

Indian textile industry is one of the leading textile industries in the world.Indian textile industrylargely depends upon the textile manufacturing and export. It also plays a major role in the economy ofthe country.India earns about 27%of its total foreign exchange through textile exports.Further, thetextile industry of India also contributes nearly 14%of the total industrial production of the country.Italso contributes around 3%to the GDP of the country.

Indian textile industry can be divided into several segments, some of whichcan be listed as be-low:cotton textiles, silk textiles, woolen textiles, readymade garments,hand-crafted textiles, juteand coir.

(3)Leading Exporters in Global Textile Machinery Exports

The textile industry is developing at a high speed, especially after the abolishment of global quotascheme. The textile machinery, which is an essential sector for the production chain, has also experi-enced some revolution with a lot of new technologies. The range of textile machinery used in the sectoris, therefore, large.More than 80 tariff lines cover the international trade of textile machinery andspare parts which are used directly in manufacturing of textiles and clothing products.

The textile machinery manufacturing hubs like China,Germany,Italy,Switzerland and Indiahave already jumped in gigantic competition to craft and bid best technologies in textile machineries.

textile industry, along with very competitive prices.China-made textile machinery and equipment ac-count for 80 percent of domestic textile machinery market.

China is not only exporter of textile machinery but also a potential importer of textile machinery.

The potential import markets for textile machineries were Chinese provinces like Jiangsu,Zhejiangand Guangdong, which accounted for roughly 71%of the Chinese overall textile machinery imports.

b.Germany provides technology support to the textile machinery

Germany has jumped out as a crucial manufacturer of textile machinery and has secured its placeby the 5th rank worldwide in machinery export. The key strengths of German machinery manufacturersbecome obvious if one considers the entire life cycle of a machine.During the entire lifetime of a ma-chine,the investment costs represent only about 10 to 50 per cent of the overall costs.

German textile machinery is characterized by its high quality and customer-specific production.

The trend setting players in the German textile machinery industry have never stopped to explore newapplication fields which provide them with great opportunities.

c.Italian textile machinery industry grows strongly

Italian textile machinery industrial sector is one of the foremost machinery manufacturers compri-sing around 300 companies employing roughly 12,400 people)and producing machinery for an over-all value of USD3.41 billion per year, with exports amounting to 80%of total sales.

Exports were always the driving force behind the sectors growth in Italy. The enthusiasm of majortextile markets, combined with the capability of Italian machinery manufacturers to assert them on aglobal scale, contributed to sustained growth in exports.

d.The textile machinery,a strong demand in the whole world

Textile machinery manufacturing is an essential part for the production chain, which becomes astrong demand in the world.Investment in this sector needs to be encouraged to decrease dependenceon imports and ultimately leads to export of notonly textiles and clothing products but machinery andspares parts as well.Price, flexibility and versatility comprise the determining factors for new equip-ment purchases. As such, the market is witnessing emergence of more efficient machines,at competi-tive prices, thanks to rapid technological advances in the textile machinery industry.End-users areincreasingly seeking complete automation solutions with enhanced flexibility that can be availed at rea-sonable costs.

Fig 1.3 Per Capita Spend on Apparel (in USD)

There is a positive correlation between consumer's spending on various categories and the eco-nomic stature of each country. In less developed economies, consumer's spending is highest on foodfollowed by clothing, housing, and other items. In developed economies,as the consumer'sdisposable income increases, the share of basic categories such as apparel reduces, whereas the shareof new categories like entertainment, recreation, consumer durable, travel etc.increases.

Based on this fact,it is expected that the per capita spends on apparel will grow at a faster ratethan the economy in Brazil,Russia,India, and China;whereas it will be slower or at par with the e-conomic growth in developed markets over next few years.
