Introduction

The treeless East African savannashimmers in the summer heat.A herd of

Thomson's gazelles,a type of antelope, nibbles quietly on the dry grass.Thereare few trees or rocks to hide the Tom-mies from predators.Instead, the an-telopes are protected by the large numberof animals in the herd.If danger threat-ens,one of the gazelles is sure to spot itin time for the whole herd to run away.

Healthy adult antelopes can outrun mostpredators.

closer to the grazing animals.Suddenlythe cheetah stands up,startling thegazelles. The frightened herd begins torun. With stunning speed, the cheetahruns down the antelope it has chosen asits prey. The cheetah bites the younggazelle's throat to strangle it.The rest ofthe herd stops in the distance and beginsto graze again under the hot sun.

The cheetah is the world's fastestland mammal. But speed does not guar-antee survival. In fact, the cheetah's bi-ology and way of life make it difficult forthe cheetah to survive. Many male chee-tahs are infertile-unable to father cubs.

Only 5 percent of cheetah cubs live to be-come adults. The remainder die from dis-ease,starvation,or attacks by otherpredators, such as lions. The swift catshave been victims of humans, too.Theyhave been hunted for their fur anddestroyed as threats to livestock.Their

hunting grounds have been fenced in byfarmers and cattle ranchers.Where chee-tahs cannot run free, they cannot sur-vive.In much of their range, cheetahshave lost the race against extinction andhave disappeared.Cheetahs are consid-ered an endangered species.

Although humans have contributedto the cheetah's disappearance, humanbeings are making an effort to see thatcheetahs do not die out altogether.Insome areas, cheetahs are protected bylaw.Zoos and animal parks Europe,

Africa, and the United States are breed-ing and raising the cats.Scientists arestudying them to learn more about theirbehavior. The more we know about chee-tahs,the better we can help the cheetahsthat still run free.
