Generalization on Public Signs

The applications of public signs are widespread,which can be seen almosteverywhere.Economic globalization makes China have more exchanges andcooperation with the world.More and more foreigners would like to travel.conduct business,live and work as well.With the increasingly frequentinternational exchanges,the number of foreign people in China is daily on theincrease.Nowadays,Chinese-English public signs marked with warning signsand service information are used extensively in public places such as airports,train stations,hotels,shopping centers and places of tourist interest,which hasplayed a positive role in strengthening international exchanges and cooperation,facilitating foreign expatriates and enhancing the international influences of thecity as well.As a crucial communication material,the public sign exhibits itsgrowing importance in the worldwide communication.

Before the translation study on public signs,it is important to have a clearidea about what public signs are.The definition,function and classification ofpublic signs are discussed in this chapter.

1.1 Definition of Public Signs in English

and Chinese

Actually,it has not been a long time before a norm is set for public signs,during which both professional and unprofessional practitioners have beenunder an obsession of the proper translation for public signs in our country.

Thus,before getting down to study the translation of public signs,we shouldfirstly make clear about the definition of public signs.As this book mainlydeals with the translation of public signs from Chinese into English,it is ofgreat necessity here to state definition of public signs mentioned in dictionariesand journals in abroad and China respectively.

1.1.1 Definition of Public Signs in English

People in English speaking countries have their definitions of public signs,which sheds a light on a different perspective from which they give themeaning of public signs.

According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (1997),signmeans a piece of paper,metal,etc.in a public place,with words or drawings onit that give people information,warn them not to do something,etc.

In Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary (Extendedfourth edition),signs are boards,notices,etc.that direct somebody towardssomething,giving a warning,advertising a business,etc.such as traffic signsfor a speed limit or a bend in the road,and shop-signs,pub-signs,parking signs,construction signs,etc.

According to New Webster's Dictionary of the English Language,a sign isdefined as "an inscribed board,plate,space,or the like providing information,guidance,or advertisement,as on or in front of a building or place of businessor along a street or road".

While in Webster 's Third New International Dictionary,public signs mean "aa sign is defined as a lettered board or other display used to identify or advertise a

place of business;b)a posted command,warning,or direction;c)Signboard."

In Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary (1977),a sign is defined as "aposted command,warning,or direction".

In Macquarie Dictionary (1987),the definition of a sign is an inscribedboard,space etc.,serving for information,advertisement,warning,etc.,on abuilding,along a street,or the like.

In the Oxford English Dictionary(1989),a sign refers to a characteristicdevice attached to or placed in front of an inn or shop,as a means ofdistinguishing it from others or directing attention to it.In later use commonlya board bearing a name or other inscriptions,with or without some ornament orpicture.

In Encyclopedia Britannica (2009),Ashley Montagu defines a sign as a"concrete denoter"possessing an inherent,specific meaning,similar to thesentence”.

In most conditions signs are called notices,instructions,public directive,etc.Mary Snell-Hornby says in her book,Translation Studies:An Integrated

Approach (2004)that"the public directive is a text type restricted to writtenlanguage,as found in signs and notices displayed for public attention".

Elana Shohancy in the paper Language in the public space mentions thescope of public signs:

In terms of language displayed in the public space,it refers to actualoffices,hospitals and any other public space (and often private ones,such ashomes).for example names of streets,public signs,names of shops,advertisements,documents,newspapers,billboards,verbal as well as non-verbalitems such as pictures and images.It is also referred to as language ecology.

The term "Linguistic Landscape",which is quite similar to "Public Sign"in Chinese,is also put forward in the same:Linguistic Landscape (LL)can beviewed as one domain within language in the public space;it refers to specificlanguage objects that mark the public sphere and is used here as one case.
