Chapter 1

Introduction to New Energy Vehicles

1.1 Environmental Impact

Text(课文)】

Modern society relies heavily on fossil fuel-based transportation for economic and socialdevelopment freely-moving goods and people. The issues related to this trend become evidentbecause transportation relies heavily on oil.Not only are the oil resources on Earth limited, but alsothe emissions from burning oil products have led to climate change, poor urban air quality andpolitical conflict. Thus, global energy system and environmental problems have emerged, which canbe attributed to a large extent on personal transportation.

Personal transportation offers people the freedom to go wherever and whenever they want.

However, this freedom of choice creates a conflict, leading to growing concerns about the

Cha

environment and concerns about the sustainability of human use of natural resources. The largenumber of automobiles in use around the world has caused and continues to cause serious problemsfor environment and human life.Air pollution, global warming, and the rapid depletion of the

Earth's petroleum resources are now problems of paramount concern.

Global warming is a result of the "greenhouse effect"induced by the presence of carbon dioxide

An increased Earth temperature results in major ecological damages to its ecosystems and in many

natural disasters that affect human populations.

Considering the ecological damages induced by global warming, the disappearance of some

endangered species is a concern because this destabilizes the natural resources that feed somepopulations. There are also concerns about the migration of some species from warm seas topreviously colder northern seas, where they can potentially destroy indigenous species and theeconomies that live off those species. This may be happening in the Mediterranean Sea,where

barracudas from the Red Sea have been observed.

Natural disasters command our attention more than ecological disasters because of the amplitudeof the damages they cause.Global warming is believed to have induced meteorological phenomenasuch as "El Nifo,"which disturbs the South Pacific region and regularly causes tornadoes, inundations, and dryness. The melting of the polar icecaps, another major result of global warming, raises the sea level and can cause the permanent inundation of coastal regions and sometimes ofentire countries.

Carbon dioxide is the result of the combustion of HCs and coal.Transportation accounts for alarge share (32%from 1980 to 1999)of carbon dioxide emissions. The distribution of carbondioxide emissions is shown in Figure 1.1.
