Memories of Zhoukoudian

substantiated human history further back to more than I millionyears ago.Backing down from its first place on the earliest humanlist,Peking Man at the Locality I of Zhoukoudian still maintainsthe most profound cultural relics title of all early human remainsacross the world.Although more human fossil remains were dis-covered at the Atapuerca SH Site of Spain in recent years,LocalityI at Zhoukoudian still holds its irreplaceable position in the studyof human evolution.

After Locality I,successive sites were discovered around itlike Upper Cave,Locality 4,Tianyuan Cave which have yieldedhuman fossils and some other sites associated with stone artefacts, forming a site group at Zhoukoudian. The excavations, researchesand other history of these sites naturally draw people's eyeballs.

A whole lot of historic details can be mirrored through academicpapers and logbooks on the excavation and research of the sitegroup at Zhoukoudian.People are also able to catch a glimpse ofthe history of the site group from the literature of the predecessorssuch as their memoirs.Zhoukoudian Site Museum has askedsome of its veterans to orally contribute vivid and unprecedenteddetails from their memory what the Site Group went through inthis great collection for its future readers.Wei Jianhua,Deputy

Director of Zhoukoudian Site Museum, insisted on inviting me towrite the foreword, which makes me hesitant because I have beenbothered about a cold case of Zhoukoudian-literature differs inthe year when the first ancient human fossil was unearthed-an

event of great historical importance.According to the statement

Foreword

"While excavating in 1923 Dr.Otto Zdansky recovered fromthe Choukoutien cave deposit a worn and fossilized hominidmolar tooth which he recognized at the time of its discovery asbeing anthropomorphic"on page 7 in the 1933 edition of Fossil

Man in China written by Davison Black, the first fossilizedhuman molar which was unearthed from this site happened in1923.However,based on Excavations Zhoukoudian written by Jia

Lanpo and his colleague in 1984,"a highly suspicious tooth wasfound in the excavation that took place in I921"(p.I5,from thecontext the tooth means the first human tooth fossil unearthedat Zhoukoudian). It is pretty confusing as to who is right and whois wrong.Neither of the authors was able to witness the event.

Nevertheless,Davison Black visited Zhoukoudian either in 1926 or1927 and Jia Lanpo came to the same site in 1931.So,we cannot besure that neither had the chance to talk to the person(s)involved.I may conclude from the above cases that contradictorydescriptions may occur in the aftermath of an event which is notlogged in time.I am not in a position to comment on the detailsin this book due to my limited time, energy and possibility ofverifying the facts, what I can do is to offer the following advice:

As an editor, you need to caution the narrator that great caremust be taken to proofread the literature so as to avoid possibledeviations from the original text or even mistakes in the processof switching recordings to writings. In views of the uncertaintyof the year in which the above-mentioned human tooth fossil wasdiscovered,I would strongly suggest to the readers that never

Memories of Zhoukoudian

neglect the fact that discrepancies or even distortion can happento the memory of narrators in very old days including me myself.

What they have stated can be of great value for reference butshould never be 1oo passed on to others as truth.Otherwise, itmight cause confusion among people of our future generations.

If the reader finds the literature in this book is self-contradictoryor what is stated in this book is incompatible with actual eventsor facts, please bear in mind the famous motto of Mencius "Tobelieve everything said in the book is worse than to have no booksat all."Try rational thinking. If the reader is able to raise his/herdoubts discovered in the book before the narrators pass away,it will certainly be beneficial for all his/her doubts to be clearedwithout their running into some new ones down the road.Maythis collection bring more positive rather than negative impact onall our readers!

Introduction

It has been almost a century since the discovery of

Zhoukoudian Site in 1918.27 localities with academicallyvaluable fossil remains have been excavated in the site region of

Zhoukoudian, where unearthed were over 40 individual fossilremains of homo pekinensis with different gender and age groups, over Ioo,ooo pieces of stone artifacts, tons of fire ruins andnearly one hundred kinds of mammal fossils, which have not onlydrawn eye-balls of the world but also have become the first tobe included on the world cultural heritage list in China.Fruitfulresults have been achieved thanks to the hard work and wisdomof numerous people including experts and scholars. In those days, the max number of pros who had joined in the excavation andresearch of Zhoukoudian Site reached a staggering number of onehundred including renowned scholars in China and those fromoverseas. This is where Chinese scholars first signed up for fieldarchaeological excavations.Zhoukoudian Site is also a legendaryplace where the finding, losing, and searching of the skull fossilsof Sinanthropus pekinensis or Peking Man has drawn so much

Memories of Zhoukoudian

attention of the world that until now the international academiccircles are still trying their best to find these lost skull fossils.

In the face of great changes of nearly one hundred years over

Zhoukoudian Site,we,guardians and managers of Zhoukoudian

Site, are thinking of digging out stories behind the archaeologicalexcavation of Zhoukoudian Site in an attempt to retain as muchrelevant information as possible to faithfully record its bygonedays. Thus the method of oral narration has been finalized and adecision has been made to invite as many as possible of those whohave participated in the excavation and research of Zhoukoudian

Site including pros, managers and senior narrators.Through one-on-one recorded interview, they once participants in the events, are encouraged to tell from memory their stories at Zhoukoudian

Site, which have made the history of Zhoukoudian Site more vi-brant,more comprehensive and closer to the historical facts.

Experiences and memories of 2I pros, managers and seniornarrators have been logged in this book.Until now, some of themhave either got new jobs elsewhere or have retired. In order tocomplete the mission,we have covered long distances to placesin Chongqing and Hebei to meet our interviewees either in theirhomes or on their jobs. After one year's sorting-out,editing andrepeated proofreading with the interviewees, the book,Memoriesof Zhoukoudian-Site of Peking Man,has been published before thecentenary celebration marking the discovery of Zhoukoudian-

Home to Peking Man.To all the excavators, researchers, keepers, managers of cultural heritage, and guardians of Zhoukoudian Site,

Introduction

it is so gratifying!

We have been very much impressed by the profound emotionand great love all the interviewees still maintain for Zhoukoudian

Site during our interviews with them. And we have been greatlyawed by their professionalism. We still remember the great detailsso many of the pros have told us on their work, study and life at thesite as well as the everlasting influence the site has on them downthe road. After the initial draft is completed, they have repeatedlyproofread the literature and filled us in with more ideas of revisionand improvement.Such serious scholastic mentality and work eth-ics are well worth our learning and copying. As a result, this bookcarries with it not only the narrators'precious memories but alsotheir enthusiasm, friendliness and love for Zhoukoudian Site.

We owe our heartfelt thanks to the Institute of Vertebrate

Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP)for their support ofthe editing and publication of this book and our special gratitudegoes to our 9o-year-old academician-Mr Wu Xinzhi, for theforeword he has contributed to the book.

The sorting-out and editing of the book follows a chronolog-ical order by interviewing the narrators whose ideas are respectedand confirmed in the process of publication and whose academicpoints of view involved in the book represent those of their own.

We apologize to our readers for any discrepancies in this book.

Dong Cuiping,Curator and Managing Director of

Zhoukoudian Site Museum
