In an academic community of"Publish or perish",writing research papers and getting thempublished has been a must for anyone who wants to sustain or to further a career or even tosurvive in academia.Murray made a list of the reasons for publishing in academic journals:
career progression-moving up to the next rung on the laddergaining recognition for work you have done
stopping someone else taking credit for your work or using your materialspersonal satisfaction of completing a new goalsetting yourself a new challenge
.helping your students to gain recognition for their worklearning how to write to a higher standardcontributing to knowledgebuilding your institution's status
●developing a profile
Writing and publication also make what a scientist does socially pertinent and valuable. As
Day and Gastel2aptly stated:
A scientific experiment is not complete until the results have been published and understood.
This part addresses the general requirements of a typical medical paper in English andprovides guidelines for writing such a paper, focusing specifically on the manuscript style, abstract, body, reference styles, and other important issues.

Fig.1.1 Major Aspects of Clarity
Example 1.1
Dietary data were from mixed sources and were not available for all countries, increasing thestatistical uncertainty of our estimates.
Example 1.2
These efforts, although useful, had several important limitations, including insufficientgeographically representative data on dietary consumption, inaccurate characterization ofpopulation distribution of dietary intake, insufficient discription of biases of different sourcesof dietary assessment, standardization of the intake to 2,000 kcal per day,and insufficientaccounting for within-person variation of intake of dietary factors.
Example 1.1 clearly states the flaw concerning the data sources that contributed to increased uncertaintyin the statistical estimates.Example 1.2,though long, listed coherently five aspects in which thestudy was limited.Readers know exactly what the authors mean without ambiguity and confusion.
Example 1.3
Poor
The time to pain effective relief in experiment group is significantly less than in the controlgroup(Z=1.985,P=0.047).
Revised
The time to effective pain relief in the study group was significantly shorter than that in thecontrol group (z=1.985,P=0.047).

1.1.2
Conciseness
Conciseness does not simply mean shortness. It refers to the quality of being brief but comprehensive, with a lot of information clearly given in just a few words.Concision, brevity, economy, andterseness are its synonyms used by different authors.Look at the following two examples.
Example 1.4
However, with Wi-Fi exposures becoming increasingly common and with many of our exposuresbeing without our consent, there is much concern about possible Wi-Fi health effects
Example 1.5
The consumption of sugary drinks has increased worldwide during the last few decades andis convincingly associated with the risk of obesity, which in turn is recognized as a strong riskfactor for many cancers.
A way to determine the conciseness of a sentence is to check whether it is informative enoughwithout unnecessary words.Example 1.4 and 1.5 both convey abundant information but containno superfluous words.
Example 1.6
Poor
Those controversies are of great clinical significance but remained unsolved due to the impreciseand usually conspicuously low incidence of LVI in gastric cancer. The incidence of LVI in gastriccancer was reported in a wide range from 18.2%to 59.6%4..7.(41 words)
Revised

Example 1.7
Poor
Obesity decreased in families with lower household incomes but smoking increased in poorerhouseholds. Both the decrease in obesity and the increase in smoking were greater whenonly men were included in the analyses.(34 words)

Example 1.8
Poor
Rapid dehydration was caused by elevated body temperature.(8 words)
Revised
Rapid dehydration was caused by fever.(6 words)
1.1.3
Correctness
Linguistically, correctness requires that the written text is free of grammatical and spellingmistakes.Common grammatical mistakes include those with punctuations(Example 1.9),tenses(Example 1.10),and subject-verb agreement (Example 1.11).
Example 1.9
Wrong
The control cells showed modest internalization, but contrary to our hypothesis, drug treatedcells showed even less internalization.
Correct
The control cells showed modest internalization but, contrary to our hypothesis,drug-treatedcells showed even less internalization.
Example 1.10
Wrong
Multiple linear regression analysis showed that physical health, worry about COVID-19infection,education and age have a greater impact on the mental health of the respondents.
Correct
Multiple linear regression analysis showed that physical health, worry about COVID-19infection,education and age had a greater impact on the mental health of the respondents.
Example 1.11
Wrong
The patients'clinical data was collected, recorded, and compared.
Correct
The patients'clinical data were collected, recorded, and compared.
For the sake of clarity and conciseness, the adverb respectively is frequently used to indicate that onelist of items correspond to another list in the order given. When respectively is used, there should be two

lists of items.More often than not, however,it is used wrongly as shown by Example 1.12.
