The College English Teaching and Reform

1.1 The syllabus of College English and its teaching reform

With the rapid development of China's social economy,the arrival of the informationage,especially with the wide application of network,computer and visual technology,highereducation has ushered in a good opportunity for development,which can provide students withindividual differences with a broader learning and exploration space.How to train compoundtalents with strong international competitiveness to adapt to the new situation,especially howto adapt to the development trend of economic globalization and university internationalization,and further improve the practical ability of college graduates,has become one of the urgentproblems to be solved in College English teaching.Therefore,colleges and universities haveset up teaching reform projects,updated teaching concepts,established new teaching models,strengthened the construction of teaching materials,optimized the curriculum system,improved teaching methods,and implemented bilingual and all English teaching.All kinds ofmeasures of colleges and universities are based on a common purpose,that is,to cultivatetalents who can obtain information in their own professional fields with English as a tool andhave international competitiveness.In this situation,how to reform college English teachingand how to cultivate non-English majors'English competitiveness have become the goal andurgent task of more and more teachers.The traditional teaching mode has been difficult tomeet the needs of modern social and economic construction.In the development of Englishteaching activities,the reform and development of colleges and universities has an extremelyimportant practical significance.We must attach great importance to it and focus on research.

In fact,in the past 20 years,great progress has been made in College English teaching andresearch in China,and the reform of College English teaching has also achieved remarkable

results.However,how to make the reform truly conform to the national conditions of our

country and the actual situation of the students being taught,how to make the College Englishcurriculum design more scientific,and how to make the teaching effect more prominent stillneed further study and exploration.Only through constant reform,research and improvementof teaching can we make greater and more contributions to the cause of college foreignlanguage education in China.

For more than 30 years from 1985 to 2017,the Ministry of Education has promulgatedthe College English syllabus five times in 1985,1986,1999,2003 and 2015.The syllabus is amacro guiding teaching document for college English Teaching in China.The content ofcollege English syllabus involves teaching objectives,teaching arrangements,teachingmethods,and teaching evaluation,which is of great significance to college English teaching.

Each revision and re-promulgation of the syllabus has led to new teaching reform.However,every teaching reform brings greater promotion and development to college English teaching.

In 1985,two kinds of the college English syllabus were made for four-year undergraduateprogram of science and engineering and four-year undergraduate program of arts in collegesand universities.The syllabus was made mainly in the consideration of the differences madebetween the students of arts and science in colleges and universities at that time,especially inorder to connect with the syllabus of middle school at that time.Its teaching objectives mainlyemphasized the following three aspects:first,lay a good foundation for English language;second,lay a solid foundation for English language,and the third is to train students to useEnglish to obtain certain information related to their majors.The purpose of college Englishteaching is to train students to have strong reading ability,certain listening ability,preliminarywriting and speaking ability,so that students can use English as a tool to obtain theinformation needed for their majors.In other words,the first purpose of college Englishteaching is to "cultivate students'strong reading ability",followed by "certain listeningability",followed by "preliminary writing and speaking ability".The purpose of CollegeEnglish teaching is"reading first",as the primary purpose.

On the basis of the former college English syllabus,the new college English syllabus

issued by the Ministry of Education in 1999 put forward new requirements for teachers andstudents in terms of teaching requirements,teaching principles,teaching methods and testevaluation.The new syllabus was no longer divided into arts and science and engineering,nolonger limited to majors,but defined the teaching object of college English as"non-Englishmajors in colleges and universities".This change has been affecting the present.CollegeEnglish has become a unified course name for non-English majors,which distinguishes theEnglish courses for English majors.Although the syllabus of this time still took the cultivationof students'reading ability as the first teaching purpose,the syllabus of the third level in 1985attached great importance to the basic teaching of English language,and focused on thecultivation of students'ability to obtain information directly from reading and listeningmaterials,but the syllabus of 1999 attached great importance to the cultivation of students'communicative ability and application ability.Let's make a slightly detailed comparison inthe following:

Through the comparison,we can see that the 1985 syllabus attaches great importance tobasic language teaching,focusing on the cultivation of students'ability to obtain informationdirectly from reading and listening materials,while the 1999 syllabus attaches greatimportance to the cultivation of students'communicative ability and application ability.

However,the requirement of the first level is unchanged,and it is still "stronger readingability”.

After entering the 21st century,with the accelerated development of China's economy,

China's accession to the WTO,the process of China's internationalization has been improved.China has a stronger voice in the world and a stronger economic power.This undoubtedlyadds a strong impetus to college English teaching and reform in China.In 2004,the

Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education issued the College English

Curriculum Teaching Requirements (Trial),and in 2007,it was revised and officially issuedfor the College English curriculum teaching requirements.The teaching requirements ofcollege English course promoted and dominated the teaching reform practice of college

English,and the teaching concept,content and means had changed.Many colleges and

universities across the country began to explore the teaching mode of combining computerwith classroom teaching.Based on the network platform and computer,college Englishteaching has been implemented to strengthen the cultivation of students'English listening andspeaking ability,and the evaluation mode of both formative and final parallel had beenimplemented,which had effectively promoted the development of students'independentlearning ability.In 2004,it was pointed out in the teaching requirements that "the goal ofcollege English teaching is to cultivate students'comprehensive application ability of English,especially listening and speaking ability,so that they can effectively exchange information inoral and written form in English in their future work and social communication,and at thesame time,enhance their independent learning ability and improve their comprehensivecultural literacy,so as to meet the needs of China's economic development and internationalcommunication".This requirement fully emphasizes the importance of oral conversationability.It can be said that compared with the syllabus of 1985 and 1999,the teachingobjectives in the College English Curriculum Teaching Requirements in 2004 were not somuch a reform as a revolution,because in terms of the requirements of English ability,the"reading leading"which had been implemented for decades in China's public Englishteaching had been changed to "listening and speaking leading".It is necessary to say that the

training goal of college English teaching is a revolution and a subversive reform.In particular,it emphasized the requirements of "college English teaching mode based on computer andmultimedia".In 2004,180 colleges and universities across the country were implemented thereform of college English teaching mode under the network environment.From 2006 to 2008,the Ministry of Education approved 100 colleges and universities as the Demonstration

University of college English teaching reform.In 2015,the College English Teaching Guiding

Committee of the Ministry of Education officially issued a new college English guidancedocument,namely the College English Teaching Guide.During the 20 years from 1985 to2015,the College English Teaching Guiding Committee of the Ministry of education proposedfour changes to the College English syllabus,which put forward higher requirements forteaching purposes.This not only reflects the improvement of college English teaching in

China,but also reflects the country's higher requirements for College English teaching.

1.2 Multimedia and web-based college English teaching

In the traditional college English teaching,the normal classroom teaching activities aremainly in the control of teachers in the extent of explanation,questioning,answering questionsand so on.In the limited classroom teaching activities,the teaching efficiency is low,theoutput is limited,the two-way communication is generally neglected,the classroom teachingoften becomes the teacher's "single role play".Therefore,both teachers and students feel theclassroom atmosphere is dull and boring.It also causes a series of chain reactions.Forexample,in the process of writing,the biggest obstacle for students is that they have nothing to
